DIGITAL FRAME REVIEW

Toshiba DMF102XKU Digital Photo Frame

STYLE of the TOSHIBA DMF102XKU DIGITAL FRAME

Frame Appearance:

This 10.1” frame has a shiny black surface. Its acrylic covered screen has modernistic-looking white lines along all its edges. It came totally encased in a peelable plastic. The frame does attract fingerprint smudges which can be ameliorated with a microfiber cleaning cloth. The size of the frame is 12.52” x 8.23” x 1.52" and it weighs 2.46 lbs.

Buttons and Ports:

Touch controls for menu navigation directly on the frame are located on the right side. They light up when touched and disappear when not in use. The controls include Mode, Menu, Forward, Back and Up and Down Arrows and Enter. A touch on the buttons will emit a beep sound which can be disabled if desired.

DISPLAY OPTIONS for the TOSHIBA DMF102XKU DIGITAL FRAME

Frame Stand:

The frame stand is bar-shaped and screws easily and strongly into the back of the frame. The stand is not adjustable. It can be placed in a vertical position but it is not as sturdy in that position. (It also looks a little funny vertically). There is a rubber support to set the frame on but I don’t really understand why it is there at all. The frame is also wall-mountable.

Clock/Calendar/Alarm:

Toshiba has been very thorough with this feature. There are several ways to format the time, including either 12 or 24 hours and 4 different clock styles. The calendar goes from 2009 to 2039 and there are 3 different calendar styles. The alarm is easy to set.

Power On/Off:

Revised Software Downloads:

Available from the Menu.

Remote Control:

Toshiba DMF102XKU Digital Frame remote

The remote should work within 16 feet of the sensor on the frame and at about a 22.5 degree angle from the front of the frame. The remote that came with my frame did not work even after I inserted a new battery. I had purchased the frame more than 90 days before I actually had time to review it so Toshiba would not give me a replacement. I was able to purchase another remote from the Toshiba parts store. Luckily, most of the functions of the frame, except for some sub menus, can be accessed totally from the touch screen menu.

I finally was able to download the 78 page manual from Retrevo.com.

KUDOS for the TOSHIBA DMF102XKU DIGITAL FRAME

The touch controls make it easy to navigate through the menus and they are very responsive to a light touch. They each emit a beep when touched. There is also an option to turn off the beep. The picture displays were very crisp and clear and I did not notice any distortion when I turned on the “Fit to Screen” option. It is a very attractive device. The option to have multiple memory sources available and access to individual files in each is well worth the price of the frame. The support tech was helpful and friendly and answered the phone quickly. Setting up the wireless feature and the FrameChannel and the Picasa accounts was effortless. The ability to email pictures to this frame makes sharing and connecting with family and friends a breeze.

CAVEATS for the TOSHIBA DMF102XKU DIGITAL FRAME

Not able to stream wirelessly from a networked computer onto this frame. No mention of digital frames on the website so I could not download the manual as was suggested in the documentation that came with the frame. At first I was annoyed that I actually had to download the manual. But when I realized that it contained 78 pages, I could see that saving paper may have been the goal here. Multiple fingerprint smudges on the acrylic cover of the frame (I always keep a microfiber cloth nearby). The sound from the speakers is not great, but better than I’ve heard from many other multi-media digital frames. The warranty period of only 90 days could present a problem.

CONCLUSION:

This very attractive and well-constructed frame is one of my favorites. It sits on my kitchen counter and gives me updated information of my choice, both locally and globally, from feeds on FrameChannel. It displays my photos from many different sources in many different ways with easy-to-use options to change the slideshow settings. A computer is required for some features and a higher level of technical skill may be necessary at first to operate it. For the right person, this frame could be pre-loaded with photos onto its large internal memory and it would be a very welcome gift to enjoy for many years to come. I highly recommend this frame and any updated versions to come in the future.
