PHILIPS HOME ESSENTIALS DIGITAL PHOTO FRAME SPF3408T

Philips Home Essentials spf3408t

STYLE of the PHILIPS SPF3408T

Frame Appearance:

This 8” digital frame could easily pass for a traditional frame. The well-constructed square reddish-brown wooden frame could easily fit into almost any décor. The screen is surrounded by a white matting or bezel.

Buttons and Ports:

Philips SPF3408T buttons

Control buttons for menu navigation are located on the top of the square box located on the back of the frame. The buttons are on the top of the box. If the frame is hung on the wall, access to these buttons would be awkward. The remote control would have to be placed nearby to control the frame.

The buttons allow for zooming and changing between photo and clock, as well as other navigation features. Pressing the button marked “OK” during a slide show or clock mode will access the Main Menu.

The memory device reader slot and the USB flash drive port are located on the right side of the center box. The off/on switch is located on the left. There is no mini-USB port for transferring images from a computer.

DISPLAY OPTIONS of the PHILIPS SPF3408T

Stand:

Philips SPF3408T back view

The frame is wall-mountable so the frame stand closes flush to the back. The frame is adjustable. The stand can be pulled out but the user must then slide it out to make sure the frame stands upright and is at the best viewing angle. The User Manual suggests only sliding the foot out 2 click positions. The support tech suggested sliding it all the way out. This made the stand much sturdier. Supposedly the frame can be used vertically or horizontally but I found that in horizontal mode the stand is not stable enough, even with the adjustments as above.

PICTURE FUNCTIONS and ADVANCED FEATURES of the PHILIPS SPF3408T:

Automatic Slideshow:

The frame contains 12 pre-installed (in its internal memory) selected photos from around the world displaying the different transitions available for slideshows. If a memory device is inserted while the frame is on, the screen will display a prompt asking if the user would like to copy the pictures to the 128 MB internal memory of the frame. If yes, copying will proceed and then the images from the memory device will display as a slideshow after the copy is completed. If the choice is not to copy, the slideshow will begin from the memory device. If no selections are made in 15 seconds, the slideshow will also start automatically. If a card is inserted when the frame is turned off, the slideshow will start immediately when the frame is turned on, rather than the copy prompt.

Slideshow Settings:

Slideshow settings include single, repeat all and random. Available transitions between photos are Fade, Shutter, Cross Combination, Mask, Brick, Dissolve, Bar, Expansion, Silk, Snail, Scroll, Grid, Random (different effects out of sequence) and Off. Whatever setting is chosen will apply to all the slideshows stored on all media.

Intervals are 3 seconds (default), 10 seconds, 30 seconds and 1 minute.

Zoom:

Though this is a feature offered by this frame, it does not work well and this fact was confirmed by the support tech.

Copy and Delete:

Can copy and delete photos from the internal memory to a connected memory device and from a connected memory device to the internal memory. No computer is required.

Image Resizing:

There are 2 choices-- full screen or actual size.

Collage Mode:

The collage mode contains many theme choices. They are Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas, Wedding and Birthday or just multiple images can be chosen to be displayed.

Automatic Picture Rotation:

Only works while the slideshow is running. Images will revert to their original position when memory device is removed.

Recognition of Files and Folders:

The thumbnail mode is available from a slideshow by pressing the OK or Exit button. From there, photos can be copied, deleted, rotated, etc. A very nice feature is that individual photos can be saved into a Favorites album in the internal memory, making it easy to display a slideshow of favorite images without having to go through all the photos in the internal memory which can hold up to 1000 photos (though large photos may take up more space).

Language Settings:

These include English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Netherlands, Portuguese and Italian.

Clock/Calendar:

There are 2 clock modes available—analog and digital. Choosing clock will just display the clock. Choosing calendar will display the photo slideshow, clock and calendar in collage mode.

Power On/Off:

This Philips frame employs a Smart Energy Saver feature with 4 ways of managing power consumption. The scheduler at 50% will automatically operate at low power during nighttime and resume normal power during daytime—7AM to 9PM. Choosing the scheduler at 100% will actually turn the power off from 7AM to 9PM. NOTE: Be careful to set the time on the clock first before choosing scheduled 100%. That way, you will be aware that if you have a blank screen, it may be that the frame is simply in sleep mode and will not awake again until 7AM! If save 20% or save 50% are chosen, the frame will operate at that indicated power consumption rate full-time.

Remote Control:

Philips SPF3408T Digital Frame Remote

The remote control is used for navigation, rotating pictures, entering collage mode, toggling between clock/calendar and photo mode and smart energy saver. Navigation is very simple and intuitive. The remote is easy to use, very responsive and works from over 8’ away. The Main menu is accessed by pressing the OK button during a slide show or clock/calendar mode. Pressing the up and down arrows will access such sub menu features as slideshow settings, choosing memory source for pictures and date settings of day/month/year. There is no place to insert the remote on the frame.

ACCESSORIES INCLUDED with the PHILIPS SPF3408T

Remote Control, AC/DC Power Adapter, User Manual and Quick Start Guide.

COMPATIBILITY

Windows 200/SP/Vista/Windows 7 and Mac OS X. There can be no direct connection by USB to a computer.

WARRANTY

1 year limited warranty.

KUDOS for the PHILIPS SPF3408T DIGITAL PHOTO FRAME

Beautiful, bright and clear photos. Ability to copy photos to a Favorites Album in the internal memory and then only show the selected photos in a slideshow. No mercury or nickel cadmium in battery. Materials that can be recycled. Navigation is intuitive with very short learning curve. Website is easy to navigate and support is excellent. My phone call to support was answered immediately and the support tech answered every one of my questions adequately and was very helpful and friendly. Documentation in the User Guide is good. Power management offers 4 choices, 2 which work while the frame is on and 2 which power the frame off or on at 7AM or 9PM or lower the power during those hours. Internal memory is relatively large. There are many picture transitions to choose from.

CAVEATS for the PHILIPS SPF3408T DIGITAL PHOTO FRAME

Frame stand should be pulled out all the way to be sturdy but the frame can only be in one position. No direct computer connection so only way to transfer photos from computer to frame is through a memory card or flash drive. Except for brightness, can only change photo settings one photo at a time and unless photos are in the internal memory, the settings will revert after the memory source is removed. No place to insert remote on frame. There is no option for setting the power on/off for any time other than 7am to 9pm. If the frame “goes to sleep”, it will not wake up until 10 hours have passed (from 9pm to 7am).

CONCLUSION

As a stand-alone photo slideshow display digital frame, this is a very nice product. The documentation, website and tech support are very good. The frame is pleasing to look at and the photo display is excellent. This frame can be pre-loaded and pre-formatted to be gifted to and enjoyed by anyone, regardless of his or her level of technical skill.
