MEEFRAME MF-801W
1 GB of INTERNAL FLASH MEMORY

MeeFrame MF-801W wireless digital frame

The MeeFrame MF-801W was manufactured by LOOQS, a company established in 2009, with headquarters based in The Netherlands and engaged in the design, distribution and marketing of electronic lifestyle products worldwide.

PLEASE BE AWARE: AS OF DECEMBER, 2011, THE LOOQS BRAND AND ALL ACTIVITIES WERE DISCONTINUED.

I have included this wireless frame for those of you who may find these models still available from online retailers and/or individuals.

It is not clear at the time of this writing whether or not the MeeChannel.com (explained below) is still operating. Without access to MeeChannel.com, this frame will not be able to be used wirelessly to access photos, news, weather and radio stations through the internet.

Fortunately, there is both a card slot and two USB ports (one for flash drives and a mini USB port for transferring photos from a computer to the internal memory of the frame). Thus, the frame will still be able to be used as a simple plug and play digital photo frame.

Even though the MeeBox NAS (Network Attached Storage) device is no longer being produced, the frame has UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) functionality and may still be able to stream media from another media server.

The MeeFrame MF-801W is a (wireless) digital frame with an 8” diagonal touchpanel LCD screen. To facilitate using the touchpanel screen (and not leave fingerprints), a stylus is included. The stylus fits conveniently into a slot on the top back of the frame.

The touchscreen will need to be calibrated by the stylus before using the first time.

MeeChannel.com:

This is a free online media sharing service managed by Looqs for its registered MeeFrame owners to store, manage, edit and share pictures. Each account can be associated with one or more MeeFrames and each MeeFrame can also allow access to any other MeeFrame owner for photo downloading and sharing.

The photos are stored on MeeChannel.com under one of the following:

  • My Photos

These are stored in albums. You can choose to have all photos viewed or just those in a particular album. Thumbnails for each choice will be available.

KUDOS

  • MeeChannel.com is free and allows for photo sharing, editing, and storage
  • Access to up to 5 Flickr and Picasa accounts as well as to photos on MeeChannel.com.
  • Photos can be emailed to and from MeeFrames.
  • UPnP compliant.
  • Firmware updates available.
  • Speakers deliver good sound.
  • Customer service responsive and good, especially with emails.
  • Stylus is stored securely on the frame itself.
  • 12 and 24 hour time supported.
  • alarm clock available and Add Alarm function will allow selection of music on frame for alarms.

CAVEATS

  • Most of the above does not apply if MeeChannel.com is not operating. The LOOQS brand has been discontinued as of 12/2001.
  • The scrolling interface can be a bit glitchy and a little confusing.
  • Software does not allow all functions and features to work seamlessly.
  • This is NOT a frame for the non-tech savvy if all functions are desired to be used.
  • Using a finger to scroll through the options can be awkward so the stylus is definitely needed.
  • May need to manually install firmware updates before getting the internet connection to work properly.
  • News articles are only headlines and photos from news can appear grainy.
  • Wirelessly loading pictures to the frame is a little cumbersome.
  • Sending pictures by email is also a bit hard. There appears to be some lag time between going to the online account to receive new pictures before they will display on the linked frame.
  • Cannot get pictures directly from Facebook.
  • Cannot create slideshows by combining photos from different sources.
  • Alarm function does not integrate well with the on/off scheduling of the frame. For example, if the frame is asleep, the alarm will still go off but there is no way to turn it off because the screen is blank.
  • No documentation for the Remote Control in the manual.
  • No video supported.

CONCLUSION

The MeeFrame 801-W could function as a wireless frame only if the free online website, MeeChannel.com is fully functioning. Even so, if all features were to be available, there seems to be more of a learning curve required than a non-tech savvy person would want to endure. At times, there seemed to be problems with the software not meeting expectations. Although a firmware update may have been necessary, it had to be manually applied and again, a non-tech savvy person would probably have had a problem with this.

If all the features and functions had worked properly at all times, this would have been a very good choice for a person looking to pull photos from Picasa and/or Flickr or from the MeeChannel public library into pleasing slideshows while listening to music and/or Internet radio stations. Checking the weather and headline news might have been a plus for higher technologically skilled users or simply features that add to the cost of the frame that would end up not being used by many.

Again, since LOOQS has been discontinued and they will no longer be manufactured, these frames, when available, should be purchased at a price that is very much discounted from the original. They can then probably be used satisfactorily as ordinary, non-wireless digital photo frames.
