Digital Frames with
Built-In Scanners

Digital frames with built-in scanners are a logical step up for digital frames.

We all have our photo collections somewhere. Whether they are stored in albums, boxes, cameras or computers depends on our individual interest in keeping and sharing memories, based on each of our own limits of time and money. The fact remains, however, that if we want to prepare our as yet non-digitized photos for long-term storage and sharing, some form of scanning device or service will have to be utilized.

Voila!…digital frames with built-in scanners! Scanning a large number of photos can be a very tedious and tiresome job. Using a scanning service can be expensive. It was inevitable that someone would manufacture a digital photo frame that could also scan photos!

Examples of digital photo frames with built-In scanners include the Mustek PF-A6L, the JOBO ScanViewer and the Exemode Yashica DVF 828 (in Japan). All three sell for approx. $180.

Mustek PF-A6L Digital Photo Frame with Built-In Scanner

Mustek Photo Frame Scanner

This frame has an 8” diagonal screen with an 800 x 600 high resolution active matrix TFT LCD display. Photos can be seen as thumbnails, in full-screen size or in automatic photo slideshows with optional MP3 audio backgrounds. The unit also plays AVI, DAT, MPEG, and MPEG-4 videos and can display a built-in alarm clock and calendar.

The aspect ratio of this frame is 4:3. The Mustek is USB compatible for photo transferring with a computer, if desired.

Memory formats include SD (Secure Digital), SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity), MMC (MultiMedia Card), MS (Memory Stick), MS PRO (Memory Stick Pro), xD Picture Card and CF Type 1 (Compact Flash).

Photos from 1 ˝” x 2” up to 4” x 6” photos can be scanned into the frame as 300 dpi JPG images and stored on the frame’s 1 GB of internal memory (which can hold up to 3000 pictures).

All functions can be accessed via the touchscreen buttons on the front of the frame or through the included remote control.

The Mustek PF-A6L is also PictBridge compatible, making scanning directly from a camera a cinch--a plus for the non-computer savvy consumer! The company states that scanning photos is “as easy as feeding bills into a vending machine!”

The frame is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, or Mac OS X.

The Mustek digital frame with built-in scanner (Mustek PF-A6L)can be found at the following retailers: Amazon.com, Newegg.com, and TigerDirect.com

JOBO ScanViewer

JOBO ScanViewer

The JOBO company has been around since the 1920s and the Apollo 11 pictures were processed using JOBO photographic equipment. The JOBO ScanViewer has essentially the same features as the Mustek PF-A6L. You will notice that all three digital photo frames + scanners look almost identical.

Exemode Yashica DVF828

Exemode photo frame plus scanner

The Exemode Yashica is Japan’s contribution to the digital photo frame plus scanner. As with the JOBO ScanViewer, the similarities of all three devices are striking and the features are essentially the same. Unfortunately, none of the three has Wi-Fi connectivity.

If you are one of those looking to completely digitize all those photos from long ago or from yesterday, a digital photo frame with a built-in scanner may be the solution you are looking for.
