PANDIGITAL PI1002DW WIRELESS DIGITAL PHOTO FRAME
1 GB Internal Memory
VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION. PLEASE READ.
This frame is included in this section on wireless digital frames because it is one I recommend, but at this time IT IS NOT WIRELESS CAPABLE (although it is Bluetooth capable and can import photos directly from certain Bluetooth-equipped cell phones).
In the section on wireless digital frames, I explained that free web-based content for digital frames is no long available since the 2 sources for importing free content from the Internet and photos from many online photo-sharing sites (FrameIt and FrameChannel) are no longer in service.
This particular frame was manufactured to connect wirelessly to FrameIt. Pandigital has stopped the manufacture of its wireless dongle (which is the only one that works with this and other Pandigital wireless frames) until further notice. All Pandigital distributors have sold out of this product as well.
At some point in time, if another service such as FrameIt and FrameChannel appears on the scene, this frame may once again be considered a wireless frame. There is a new service called FrameAlbum which is currently in beta testing and has the intention of stepping into FrameIt's and FrameChannel's place. FrameAlbum is attempting to connect wireless frames to photo-sharing sites and perhaps a few Internet information sites to begin with. If the beta testing goes well, the owner will attempt to add more Internet content.
If this project proves to be valuable service, all wireless digital frame owners may be able to once again use their frames in the manner in which they were meant to be used.
The Pandigital PI1002DW wireless digital photo frame is very stylish with its matte dark espresso frame. Two interchangeable mats, a charcoal and a white, are included. It looks very much like a traditional photo frame and would look fine in almost any setting. The frame can also be wall-mounted.
The 10.4" (diagonal) frame measures 16.2x6.2x18.2 and weighs 5.6 pounds. The actual viewing area is 8" wide by 6" high.
Buttons and Ports:
NOTE: The Pandigital PI1002DW must be turned on and off from the frame itself. The included remote does not have this function. The workaround for this is to program the frame to automatically turn on and off at specified times. This frame can be scheduled on and off for weekends or for weekdays, which is a very nice feature, especially if it is being used in an office.
The top of the frame contains the Menu, Left Arrow, Right Arrow, Enter and Exit buttons. One side contains the on/off switch and all the connections for memory cards, the compact flash slot, the USB port for flash drives and the DC power jack.
The back of the frame has the embedded speakers, the wall-mount holes and a mini USB port for transferring photos from a computer directly to the frame.
A very nice feature is the magnetized area on the back for storing the remote. Of course, when the frame is wall-mounted, this feature is useless.
All of the digital frame's features can be accessed and all the functions performed by using the remote control. Certain functions, such as the ability to rotate and zoom images, volume control, etc., can only be performed by using the remote control and are not available from the control buttons on the top-back panel of the frame.
DISPLAY OPTIONS for the PANDIGITAL PI1002DW
Stand:The sturdy adjustable stand is part of the body of the frame and can be extended for more stability. It can be easily rotated to set the frame in either portrait or landscape mode.
As mentioned above, the frame is wall-mountable (but the remote will have to be secured elsewhere when the frame is mounted on the wall).
The screen resolution is 800x600.
The aspect ratio is 4:3. There is an optimal image display function which allows the user to find the best fit for the pictures shown on the Pandigital Panimage screen.
Brightness, Contrast and Color:
Brightness, contrast and color can all be adjusted from the Menu Setup screen.
The viewing angle is adequate.
Screen Backlighting Display:
The screen is a 10.4" LED backlit LCD frame.
The screen surface is glass.
METHODS OF CONNECTIVITY for TRANSFERRING PHOTOS for the PANDIGITAL PI1002DW
Usually the best and fastest way to transfer photos from a computer to a the internal memory of a digital frame is through a USB cable connected to both the PC and the frame. Pandigital includes a USB cable for this purpose, but any USB cable would do.
If the optional wireless dongle could still be purchased from Pandigital (see top of this page), then certain online photo sharing sites could also be accessed. Currently, this option is not available.
This frame is bluetooth capable. A bluetooth adapter will have to be purchased and any manufacturer's adapter will do. When the adapter is installed in the frame, photos can be sent directly from any bluetooth-enabled cell phone to the frame, if both are within bluetooth range of each other.
The Pandigital PI1002DW comes with 1 GB of internal memory. Depending on the size and resolution of the photos, it could be capable of displaying 5000 images from its internal memory.
Images can also be transferred from a memory card to the internal memory, but this process is usually much slower.
SUPPORTED FILE TYPES for the PANDIGITAL PI1002DW
The frame has a six-in-one memory card slot for media. The supported media sources include the following:
- Compact Flash (CF)
- Secure Digital (SD)
- MultiMedial Card (MMC)
- xD Memory Card (xD)
- Memory Stick
- Memory Stick PRO
- Memory Stick PRO DUO
- USB Flash Drive
JPEG (up to 16MP) taken with a digital camera. Exif is also supported so that the date and time can be displayed with the images, if desired.
MP3. If more than one MP3 file is on a media source, each music file will play in succession until all have been played and then will repeat according to the desired music repeat mode setting.
MJPEG (motion JPEG)/AVI. Only those taken with a digital camera.
Wireless capable but only with a Pandigital wireless dongle purchase, which is not currently available. (Please see top of this page).
Bluetooth compatible. Yes with purchase of a bluetooth adapter.
PICTURE FUNCTIONS and ADVANCED FEATURES of the PANDIGITAL PI1002DW
When the frame is turned on, an automatic slideshow will begin with the contents of internal memory. If another source is desired, it will have to be chosen from the Menu and then it will be necessary to select Start Slideshow. More than one media source can be inserted at one time and then individually chosen.
Rotate and Zoom:
These functions can be accessed from the remote and are only temporary unless applied to images in the internal memory. All other images would have to be permanently changed in the digital camera or on the computer before transferring to the frame.
Copy and Delete:
Photos can be deleted from the internal memory but not from an external media source such as a memory card or USB flash drive.
Photos can be copied or reassigned from one file folder to another in the internal memory.
Frame Orientation of the PANDIGITAL PI1002DW:
The adjustable stand allows the frame to be placed in horizontal (landscape) or vertical (portrait) mode and the frame will automatically rotate the images to the correct orientation.
The remote has a good range and can be stored on the magnetized area on the back of the frame (except when the frame is wall-mounted). Please see the illustration of the remote control on this page under Buttons and Ports.
Slideshow Settings on the PANDIGITAL PI1002DW:
The slideshow settings for this frame include the following times:
- 5 seconds (default)
- 10 seconds
- 30 seconds
- 60 seconds
- 1 hour
- 24 hours
The slideshow options for transitions between photos include the following:
Recognition of Files and Folders on the PANDIGITAL PI1002DW:
Only photos stored in the internal memory can be assigned to slideshow folders. There are five category folders in the internal memory. They are:
The photos are not physically moved or copied to the folders. Instead, a link is assigned to the photo so it appears to be located in the folder. Deleting the photo from the internal member will delete the link as well.
A slideshow can be played from any slideshow folder and photos can be copied or reassigned to different folders.
Auto Power On/Off:
The PANDIGITAL PI1002DW can be programmed to automatically go into a stand-by mode by setting the schedule for weekdays and weekends on/off. The schedule can be run from either a slideshow or from the calendar/clock screen.
Clock and Calendar Modes of the PANDIGITAL PI1002DW:
This frame has clock, calendar and alarm modes. The time of day can also be displyed during a slideshow, if desired.
Resizing Photos on the PANDIGITAL PI1002DW:
There is an optimal image display function which allows the user to display the photos as actual size or optimized to the best size and resolution to best fit the screen when importing files into the internal memory. Optimal is the default option and will downscale the photo in size and compress it into a smaller JPEG, allowing more photos to be stored in the internal memory.
- Personalized Digital Greeting Card Option
A virtual keyboard can be used to set a personalized greeting which will display when the frame is powered on, a feature especially useful when presenting the frame as a gift. The directions in the manual are easy to follow. This is not a qwerty keyboard so it may take a little getting used to.
This personalized greeting may be further enhanced by assigning a photo as the greeting background.
Sample Bon Appetit seasonal recipes are included with the frame so the user can experience how this feature works. Complete seasonal cookbooks from such authors as Bon Appetit and Good Housekeeping are sold separately on the Pandigital site.
ACCESSORIES INCLUDED With the PANDIGITAL PI1002DW
Frame, AC Power Cord and Adapter, Infrared Remote Control, White and Charcoal Decorative Paper Mats, USB Cable, Quick Start Guide and User Guide.
COMPATIBILITYWindows and Mac.
Limited 1 year warranty on parts and labor.
This frame is one I definitely recommend. It has many of the "bells and whistles" I like in a digital frame but it is also extremely easy and intuitive to operate. The frame is pleasing. The photos are clear and the colors bright. It can play music and videos and has the calendar/clock/alarm and automatic on/off capabilities. I particularly like the range of options for slideshow transitions. I like to display photo art on some of my digital frames and the options for 1 and 24 hours allow for plenty of time to admire the images.
The Pandigital website is very user-friendly with plenty of FAQs available. Tech support can be accessed by email and telephone. I had no problem reaching a tech with questions.
It is unfortunate that the wireless option cannot be utilized. The frame has been on the market for quite a while now so that it can be purchased at a reasonable price, making it a good buy even without the wireless feature.
